Small Space, Big Impact: 6 Genius Organizing Hacks for Small Spaces

They say April showers bring May flowers and BOY are we ready for those flowers.

For a while there, it felt like Spring hid back under the covers like a kid who didn’t want to get up for school. But those showers will NOT be in vain because we can finally see the light at the end of the cold and rainy tunnel!!

If you’re as excited for this change of season as we are and are looking for ways to get a fresh start this spring, we have 6 hacks to re-energize your small spaces (and your life).

1. Utilize vertical space in your entryway

Most NYC apartments aren’t exactly known for having copious amounts of storage space. If you struggle to keep your entryway feeling breezy, try utilizing an Elfa Over the Door Unit to keep things organized and under control. These multi-functional pieces actually create storage where there was none (I know, magical, right?). Toss your umbrellas, hats, sunscreen, toys, and to-go items in a basket and free up space in your entry hallway or closet.

2. Maximize your existing storage with linen boxes

Whether you have a linen closet, a laundry room, or you store your sheets somewhere else, utilizing linen boxes can help keep your bedsheets contained and compact when they aren’t in use. They are a HUGE space saver and can free up square footage for other items that may be tricky to store (we’re looking at you, vacuum accessories).

3. Elevate your spice storage

My husband and I love to cook so it’s no surprise that we have tons of spices and seasonings in our home. In order to get the most bang for our spatial buck, we utilize a 2-tier turntable to double our spice storage without taking up an entire cabinet of valuable real estate.

Sage Wisdom: When setting up your new spice system, check expiration dates! While some dates are more of a gentle suggestion, sometimes an older spice will lose its flavor/intensity over time and you may want to replace those expired ones to get the best results in your dishes. *chef’s kiss*

4. Optimize space under your bathroom sink

Organizing under sinks can be a daunting task because the combination of pipes and a lot of vertical space can feel like you’re losing out on some serious (and valuable) storage! We recommend using a stackable drawer system so that your items remain accessible and functional while maximizing the vertical space. These are also great for under your kitchen sink or in a utility closet for miscellaneous odds and ends.

5. Leverage usable space in your bedroom

Adding hooks to the walls and the back of your closet doors is a simple way to significantly increase your usable storage space. This will instantly prevent the dreaded piles we all have around our apartments. Another option is to use a boot box to store items under your bed. I find them easier to use than a true under-bed storage bin because they’re smaller and less cumbersome to pull out.

6. EDIT EDIT EDIT

If you are a seasonal swapper like I am, you will have to set aside some time to switch out your cold-weather items to make space for your spring and summer clothes, shoes, and accessories. This is a fantastic opportunity to EDIT your belongings! 90% of the time, organizing and refreshing spaces isn’t about making items fit, it’s about understanding the volume of space you have to fill and matching that with the quantity of items you own. I dare you to be brutally honest with yourself. STOP trying to fit too much stuff into too small a space! As you're bringing your “new” wardrobe out, you should feel excited about what you see! If there is anything you don’t absolutely love, pass it along to someone who will (via donations, Buy Nothing groups, friends, etc.) Editing your belongings is the simplest way to make your space feel lighter and refreshed. 😊
