This closet was filled with the cutest collection of little girls clothes I think I’ve ever seen! Unfortunately, the space itself was not conducive to organization or any sort of system. It needed a total overhaul! Plastic storage bins were stacked on the ground and tons of items to grow into were piled on the single shelf. Nothing felt accessible. It was overwhelming just looking at it!
We decided to start from scratch. I designed a new closet using the Elfa system from The Container Store. The Elfa system is great because it is completely customizable AND is forever adjustable as your kids grow. Any parent will tell you, kiddos grow like weeds! Having a system that will adapt from infant stage all the way up to grown adult is huge. It is an investment to get started, but the savings in the long term is undeniable.
This little lady is two years old so her clothes are relatively small. Pro tip- if you’re designing a space for small children, add in an extra hanging bar to take advantage of the height. Don’t waste that precious vertical space. We fit THREE ROWS of hanging into this closet. I’m a huge fan of hanging clothes in general if you have the space. It is much less time consuming than folding all the little onesies and tops.
I love the idea of getting kids excited about organization from a young age. We created a pajama bar where every night, this sweet little girl can come in and see all her pj options hung up and can choose which one she wants to wear. Getting her involved in making choices and seeing how easy it can be will instill the joy of organization in her from the get go! Thats a win in and of itself right there folks!
In addition to lots of hanging space, I wanted to make sure they had ample storage for things to grow into, wipes, and boxes for sentimental items. From top to bottom, I used the pink Oskar storage box, grey Montauk storage bins, and soft pink plastic storage bins with handles. I like mixing and matching different bins in a space to create visual interest while maintaining that sense of organization.
Finally, I couldn’t deign a closet without any drawer space! I added eight new drawers for her hair accessories, shoes, bags, toys and seasonal items. Elfa drawers come in multiple depths and widths, so finding the right shape and size for any space is easy. They also have the option to add dividers that pop right into the drawers. This is my favorite feature! It keeps each drawer organized with little to no effort. The categories just stay contained on their own!
The Elfa system from The Container Store is super user friendly, designed for anyone to be able to install themselves. But if you’d love a closet transformation without any of the hassle, I’d love to design your space. We’re always taking on new projects and would love to hear from you!
