Kids playrooms can become a cluster-muck of insanity. You are not alone! I promise! Toys pile up, tension builds over who’s going to tidy the space, the kids are confused because they dont know where to put things. Its not your fault! You just dont yet have the systems of organization in place to set you and your kiddos up for success!
There are a few simple things you can do to help your kids keep their playroom neat and tidy.

First step, purge! Go through all your kids toys, pull out the ones they no longer play with and set them aside for a donation pile. You can even get them involved and ask them which of their toys they’d like to donate to kids that dont have any toys. This can be a great teaching moment about sharing and giving to the less fortunate. Once you’ve decided what toys will be kept in the space, its time to categorize!

Categorizing is all about the simple principle of keeping like-with-like. Start by making piles of all of the cars, trains, dolls, accessories, dress-up items, art supplies, etc. Keeping the categories clear and separate will help your children understand not only where to find what ever it is they’d like to play with, but also where to put it back when they are done.

Next, adding bins with large clear labels will take your playroom to the next level! The Container Store, IKEA, and Bed Bath & Beyond offer a huge variety of bins and baskets to fit every budget and style. I got these white wicker baskets from IKEA and mixed them with whimsical fabric animal bins from The Container Store. I didnt want to overwhelm the space too much visually, so went with only a few of the animal bins. I added the custom labels, from The Container Store. The structure itself is actually two KALLAX cube storage units from IKEA that I had my handyman screw together to create one large structure. I needed a unit that would accommodate more than what IKEA offered, so I used my creativity and made it work!

Finally, its down to those miscellaneous items that dont fit into bins: stuffed animals, balls, sporting equipment, larger toy sets, etc. I absolutely love these toy barrels from The Container Store for stuffed animals and balls. Your kids will be able to see all of their things and they make for easy clean up. Once all the little toy bits and pieces are tucked away, the larger toy-world sets can actually sit out and they will seem much less overwhelming.

BONUS TIP: Use the height of the KALLAX units to your advantage! Rotate which toy bins are within reach for your kids. This way they will only play with a few things at a time and when the toys that have been at the top are moved to the bottom, they’ll feel like brand new toys!
